150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation
January 1, 2013

President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War (1861-1865). It declared freedom for slaves in all areas of the Confederacy that were still in rebellion against the Union. Today, the original document is kept in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C.

In 1913, during the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, a service was held at Freeport's Bethel A.M.E. Church.
