The Elks Club
Lodge 1253 of the B.P.O. Elks, was founded in 1911 by Huyler Ellison, James Hanse, George Morton Levy, Stephen Pettit, Archer Wallace and others. Their first clubhouse was located in the old Charles L. Wallace house at the southeast corner of South Grove Street (Guy Lombardo Avenue) and Merrick Road. The
building was opened in 1912 and the ground was broken for an addition in 1913. Because of increasing membership there was a need for a new building. It was located on the property of George Bergen on Merrick Road at the south end of Bergen Place and dedicated in 1926. Because of rising costs, the building was demolished c. 1978 and their clubhouse is now located on Atlantic Avenue east of Bayview Avenue.
