Murder and Mayhem

Carman Murder

Dr. and Mrs. Edwin Carman lived at 118 West Merrick Road (north side of Merrick Road just east of the present post office.) Dr. Carman was a well known physician in Freeport who was described as a “dashing local figure married to a society beauty.” In 1914, Mrs. Louise “Lu Lu” Bailey of Hempstead came to his office and was shot. The maid said that she saw Florence Carman with a gun in the vicinity of the shooting. The first trial ended in a hung jury. George Morton Levy, a young lawyer in Freeport, took over the case on a retrial. An additional witness, a tramp, came forth to testify that he also saw Mrs. Carman shoot the woman. Levy was able to discredit both witnesses and Mrs. Carman was acquitted. The weapon was never found. Rumor has it that it is still in one of Freeport’s canals.
